Shepherd Tones
Shepherd Tones is my debut progressive chiptune album. I've spent around 18 months perfecting it. All the writing, recording, arranging, and producing was done by myself.
Where to listen
You can listen on just about any streaming service, including Apple Music and Spotify. I've also released the album on Bandcamp if you prefer to purchase music.
Progressive chiptune?
Chiptune is music made from primitive samples, following in the footsteps of synthesizer pioneers like Wendy Carlos. Unlike traditional sampling seen in modern pop music or hip-hop, where a short loop is spliced out of an existing song and new parts are recorded on top of it, chiptune samples individual instruments and rebuilds them into a complex, totally original melody.
Progressive chiptune is the term I use to describe my own music, as well as artists like Fearofdark and Tim Follin. It combines the instrumentation of chiptune with the structural and melodic complexity of jazz fusion and progressive rock.
This album breaks some of the "rules" of chiptune by including recorded lyrics and applying post-processing effects to some instruments, like distortion. I think you'll enjoy the results nonetheless, whether you're a fan of chiptune already or not.
More music from Mondobe
Last year, I released a compilation of music I've made for my game development projects.
My next album is already in the works. I'm over halfway done writing it, and the recording process is in the earliest stages. Stay tuned!
